Q/A BOOK REVIEW - THE PHANTOM TREE BY NICOLA CORNICK

"My name is Mary Seymour and I am the daughter of one queen and the niece of another."

What genre does the book belong to?

Time-slip is the first definition which comes to my mind when you ask me, but The Phantom Tree is a novel for fans of mystery, drama and romance. Perfect for readers of Philippa Gregory, Barbara Erskin or Kate Morton.

What’s the historical  setting of the novel?

There are two parallel narrative lines: one set in Tudor England and the other one in present-day England.

BOY ON THE BEACH BLOG TOUR - 5 QUESTIONS FOR AUTHOR R.D.MADDUX + GIVEAWAY

R.D. Maddux has story telling in his blood. Since he was young he’s always loved a good tale. He’s been writing seriously since he was in high school and college. His novels range from Mystery and Intrigue to Sci-fi/fantasy. With Boy On The Beach he’s set the story in modern America, to be exact, on the West Coast of California. He’s a native of the golden state and has been a resident of San Diego since 1987. Before that he grew up in northern California and lived in the Sacramento Valley and Bay Area with sojourns in some of the beautiful parts of our state.
Living in California for over 60 years he couldn't help but watch the way things have changed in our culture and the impact this coast makes on the rest of America and the world. So even though Boy On The Beach is fiction, like most serious novels, it is not without a context and comment on issues we all face in our changing world. It takes place in real locations that are very familiar to him and its characters, which are fictional, no doubt have their counterparts in the real world. Boy On The Beach is a story of intrigue, suspense, revenge, love and redemption with flashbacks to the era when sex, drugs and rock and roll set our culture on it's inevitable journey to our present day. This idea has been rattling around in his heart and mind for a decade and it's finally coming to the page.

Q/A REVIEW - THE BEES BY LALINE PAULL

What genre does the book belong to?

Laline Paull’s debut novel is quite difficult to define, to label.  It is a thrilling adventure reminding the bleak atmospheres of dystopian novels and the bitterness of the Orwellian fable, Animal Farm.

What’s the setting of the novel?

This novel has no specific setting in time and a unique, unuasual setting in place: a beehive.

BOOK UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT: WINDS OF TIME BY LILLY GAYLE, A TIME TRAVEL ROMANCE

The past is her future, the future, her past, but can she save an innocent man’s life before
history repeats itself?

As long as Selena Tillman dreams of her ancestor, Mary, who disappeared without a trace in 1871, she’ll never find peace. As long as she dreams of the half-Native American army scout accused of killing Mary, she’ll never find love. Hoping to end the dreams and learn the truth, Selena goes to Texas where Mary and the scout died and sees more than ghosts. She sees a tornado kill Mary in real time before it jumps to the twenty-first century to pull Selena into its vortex and send her back to the nineteenth century. Selena believes she’s fated to prove Dylan’s innocence and save his life, but Dylan isn’t just the man of her dreams; he’s her destiny.

Fed up with the army, bigotry, and women—especially white women, Captain Dylan Casey dedicates himself to solving the mystery of Mary’s disappearance, proving his innocence, and trying to stop a war between the whites and the Indians. Then Mary’s cousin shows up, claiming a tornado killed Mary. Dylan doesn’t trust Selena, but she’s his only ally in Canyon Creek. Yet despite their common goal, growing mutual attraction, and a Comanche shaman’s prophecy of a white woman who will change his destiny and foretell the fate of the Indian Nation, Dylan refuses to take a chance on another spoiled, white woman—until fate changes his mind.

THE STAGGERING REALITY OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING: AN INTERVIEW WITH RACHEL LINDEN, AUTHOR OF BECOMING THE TALBOT SISTERS

In Becoming the Talbot Sisters (Thomas Nelson), author Rachel Linden hopes to bring a greater awareness to issues important to women around the world and encourage them to live what she describes as “every day brave.”

Becoming the Talbot Sisters tells the story of estranged twin sisters who live very different lives on opposite sides of the world but are drawn to rebuild their relationship in support of one another as they face challenges ranging from miscarriages to sexual assault to career woes. The sisters’ stories draw from many aspects of Linden’s own life as she shares in the interview below.

An author normally works some of herself into her novel. How much of Becoming the Talbot Sisters reflects your own life?

So much of the book reflects my own personal experience! The main themes – women having courage to face infertility and miscarriage as well as sexual exploitation and trafficking – are all very personal for me. I lost my first child to miscarriage, so I identify deeply with that thread of the book. I also worked with a faith-based organization in Europe for seven years, focusing significantly on women who experienced trauma and exploitation, so that theme is one I am very passionate about. The locations in the book are also dear to my heart. I set the book mainly in Budapest where I lived for five years. Parts also take place in Sarajevo and several other fascinating locations around central Europe, all places I enjoy and want to share with readers.

As for the sister-relationship aspect of Becoming the Talbot Sisters, much like Waverly and Charlotte, my sister and I are very different and live geographically far apart. However, we have a harmonious relationship and have grown in friendship more and more as we’ve gotten older unlike the sisters in the book.

Q/A BOOK REVIEW: THE CURSED WIFE BY PAMELA HARTSHORNE

What genre does the book belong to?

It’s a historical fiction thriller, a genre Pamela Hartshorne is familiar with – and very good at -  since she has already dealt with it in some of her  previous novels, which I have reviewed here at FLY HIGH!

What’s the historical  setting of the novel?

The story takes place in Elizabethan London between 1562 and 1590.

Can you briefly sum up the plot without giving away too much?

Well, this is what you find in the book blurb. I hope it is enough to tickle your curiosity: Mary is content with her life as wife to Gabriel Thorne, a wealthy merchant in Elizabethan London.

She loves her husband and her family, is a kind mistress to the household and is well-respected in the neighbourhood. She does her best to forget that as a small girl she was cursed for causing the death of a vagrant child, a curse that predicts that she will hang. She tells herself that she is safe.

But Mary's whole life is based on a lie. She is not the woman her husband believes her to be, and when one rainy day she ventures to Cheapside, the past catches up with her and sets her on a path that leads her to the gibbet and the fulfilment of the curse.

BOOKS & MORE BOOKS - DEBORAH SWIFT'S NEW RELEASE: A PLAGUE ON MR PEPYS

Deborah Swift has been writing successful historical fiction novels about an age less frequently chosen by other writers. We've read plenty of tales set in the fascinating eras of the middle ages or the Tudor years - which Swift herself chose for a few of her novels - but we seldom find adventure or romance set in the 17th century.

BLOG TOUR - LONNA ENOX DISCUSSES HER WRITING STYLE AND PRESENTS THE LAST DANCE + GIVEAWAY

What about my style?

An early reviewer classified my mysteries as "cozy".  They are written in first person and are set in New Mexico.  I like to take the reader with me to places I love, so I incorporate description into the plot.  Readers often say, "I couldn't put it down because I kept turning pages."  I also like to infuse a bit of humor to some characters.
I write wildlife, religious, and humorous "folksy" articles.  I also write mystery novels.
When writing for the newspaper, Mrs. Head reminded me that people have only limited time or money, so we should make our stories worthwhile.  I use enough description to take the reader with me without their becoming bogged down.  My chapters tend to be short, and I allow actions and dialog to describe my characters more than long passages by the author.  My scenes are less graphic, even when my characters are holding their breaths.
I wrote my first books with crayons on paper bags when I was four years old.  My parents didn't know how I'd learned to read or write.  I filled diaries with stories, wrote a romance during science class in middle school, and entered stories and won first place in my high school literary magazine.  I never stopped writing.  But the first writing for which I received a steady income were articles I wrote and published the first two years after my children challenged me to follow my dreams.  I travelled with a wildlife photographer to Maine and wrote about the puffins, to Bosque del Apache in Socorro, New Mexico, to write about the sandhill cranes.  I sold articles about teaching experiences, and articles about my life in general.  Then one evening, on a first date with Ron Tucker, I watched a young woman dancing.  I began The Last Dance after our marriage.

FAITH AND FEARLESSNESS, A NEW SEQUEL TO GASKELL'S NORTH AND SOUTH - AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Faith and Fearlessness is a new, stand-alone sequel to Elizabeth Gaskells masterpiece, North and South, one of my best favourite novels ever. Ive read a few sequels and rewrites before, but when a review copy of Faith and Fearlessness was offered to me, I was immediately triggered by its premise, which made it different from the ones I had read which took the narration over where Mrs Gaskell interrupted it or proposed a variation to the original plot. Actually, at first, that same premise had me both puzzled and curious to discover more. Why puzzled? The book blurb immediately revealed that John Thornton, the Victorian mill owner protagonist of Gaskells novel, is left a broken man after the death of his wife Margaret and a new love interest is on his horizon. Now, that took me a while to digest, but when I started reading the book and I found myself back to Manchester (Milton in North and South), years  had  passed from Mrs Gaskells lovely ending and everything sounded and looked plausible thanks to M.G. Thomass writing style, which was captivating and fast-paced.

Ready to discover more about Faith and Fearlessness? Here are my questions to the author and her answers. If you have more questions for her, please leave them in the comment section.

BOOK UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT: THROUGH A BROKEN HEART BY COLLEEN MEISSNER

Five Questions to the Author

Hello and welcome to FLY HIGH, Colleen.  My first question for you is ... How did you do research for "Through a Broken Heart?

This book was written primarily from my own journey and education. My education which includes a Master’s in Clinical Counseling, has helped me to understand why people think and act the way they do, why they repeat patterns – like dating the same type of guy over and over again or why they avoid relationships all together.

ANITA TENERELLI AND THE EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT - CROWDFUNDING MOVIE PROJECT

If you have a look at my blog you'll find several posts dealing with my fascination with writers and actors. I really love the infinite chances a writer and an actor have to create life - or lives - through their art.
That's why when I happen to really meet  talented ones in my life,  I feel blessed and urged to share their wonderful projects and achievements with all my friends online or in real life.
I met Anita Tenerelli thanks to my sister - she is a friend of hers -  and I invited her, as a bilingual speaker of Italian and English,  to meet my students for an interview.  A native speaker is a rare guest in our little school but precious to our students of English as a foreign language.

Anita talked to them about her living and studying in Texas as as a teenager, after leaving the South of Italy with her family, and about her coming back to Italy as an adult, choosing Subiaco,  our little town surrounded by mountains not far from Rome,  to settle down with her American partner, Craig Peritz, an actor and drama teacher.
Anita has mostly been working as a teacher of English and as a drama teacher here in Italy, despite her brilliant curriculum as an actress, and her dream is to write and make movies. The Emotional Quotient is the movie project she is working on right now. What about helping her and her team to make it come true?

So when she is given tickets to take her son to see a live taping of the MyHeartChannel show Take a Chance, they go, even though it means she’ll have to stay up all night to turn in her latest article on time. To her shock, the daredevil star, Chance Risk, is none other than Graham Sawyer, the quiet accounting major she’d dated in college—someone she’d cowardly broken up with by note and hoped to never see again. When she makes a major mistake on her article, she has to swallow her embarrassment and reach out to Chance for an exclusive or risk losing her job. Chance Risk doesn’t talk to reporters. Not after the way he’s seen them destroy his brother’s marriage and career. But Take a Chance is starting to lose viewers, he’s desperate. Despite his better judgment, when Madelyn reaches out, he can’t resist the opening to figure out why she broke his heart eight years before. His only condition: she has to come to three filming locations with him and his crew to get a real sense of what the show is about.  JFK to Dublin by Brooke St. James

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Sarah Spicer took this saying to heart, at least where love was concerned. She had given up any hope in ever finding a decent man. She was convinced they had only one thing on their minds and were untrustworthy and unfit for relationships. This was exactly why she had a strict no-dating policy. That was before she met Collin Ross. He was handsome, successful, and possessed a refined confidence that any woman would have adored. Well, any woman except for Sarah. Her indifference toward his charms made gaining her affection difficult. But patience is a virtue, and Collin was determined to prove that if there was a man worthy of winning her heart, he was the one.

Nor is she about to accept the help of Kevin Grantham, her handsome neighbor, who seems to think she’s incapable of doing anything on her own.

Prejudice Meets Pride is the story of a guy who thinks he has it all figured out and a girl who isn't afraid to show him that he doesn't. It’s about learning what it means to trust, figuring out how to give and to take, and realizing that not everyone gets to pick the person they fall in love with. Sometimes, love picks them.

MEET FLAVIA BRUNETTI, AUTHOR OF ALL THE WAY TO ITALY + GIVEAWAY

Hello and welcome to FLY HIGH, Flavia! My first question for you is, where do you get inspiration for your stories?

A kernel of truth often develops into something more: something will happen to me in my everyday life, and when I go to write it down, it takes on its own shape. For example, one of my favorite short stories in All the Way to Italy came from a walk in the woods during the summer and the sound of katydids. From there came the story What Sings in the Night!

Do you write every day?

I’d love to say yes, but the truth is, everyday life very often gets in the way of writing every day! I find that there are days (especially when traveling, or in a new place) when ideas and thoughts demand to be written down almost constantly, and that’s one of the reasons I carry a notebook around with me everywhere I go. But there are stretches of time when the inspiration is much less present, and I try not to force it—or else it would stop being fun!

In today’s tech savvy world, most writers use a computer or laptop. Have you ever written parts of your book on paper?

This ties in well with the previous question—the truth is, I have a very real obsession with notebooks and pens. I adore picking out new ones, and I always have a notebook with me, and usually also a pen with crazy-colored ink. I jot down random sentences or thoughts that I can then go back and flesh out properly, and that’s usually when a laptop comes in handy!

BOOK BLITZ, PERFECTLY MISUNDERSTOOD: EXCERPT & GIVEAWAY

Perfectly Misunderstood is Book #4 in the Perfect Series by Robin Daniels. This dual perspective book is the final installment in the Perfect Series but can be read as a stand-alone.

Synopsis

Jayden Valdez is an overachieving intellectual. Mike McGinnes is Franklin High School’s dumbest jock. Even though they barely know each other, she finds his personality repulsive and he thinks she’s got a giant stick up her you know what. Mike and Jayden are surprised and annoyed when their teacher pairs them together for Spanish tutoring. Both feel it’s a complete waste of time, since nobody could learn from a person who bugs the crap out of them. Not to mention that their reputations might be ruined if people realize what they’re doing. But it doesn’t take long for Jayden to discover that Mike has a secret—he isn’t the person he appears to be. Much to her dismay, Jayden finds 'Secret Mike' strangely attractive. And for some crazy reason, Mike is amused by Jayden’s clever insults and witty banter. Suddenly, they have a much bigger problem than their mutual disdain. What started as irritating tension is beginning to feel more like romantic tension and acting on it would be a very bad idea.

Excerpt (Mike)

Jayden’s glare intensified, and I could tell she was sending me mental death threats. Eventually, she gave up and sat down across from me. “Was that so hard?” I asked.
“About as hard as you head.”

BLOG TOUR & GIVEAWAY - MY SISTER'S INTENDED BY RACHAEL ANDERSON

My Sister's Intended by Rachael Anderson

For as long as Prudence can remember, it has been understood that her sister will one day wed the eldest son of their nearest neighbor. Such an alliance will benefit both families and bring a great deal of joy to all parents involved. Unfortunately, Prudence has never been able to feel as joyful. She believes her sister is mad to consider marrying a man she hardly knows, even if he will one day make her a countess. Titles and wealth shouldn't factor into matters of the heart, and as an aspiring romance novelist, Prudence cannot fathom how anyone could even think of settling for less than love. She certainly wouldn’t, and she doesn't want her sister to either. Unable to stand by and do nothing, Prudence sets out to help the awkward couple discover the best in each other with the hope that they will eventually find love. What she neglected to foresee, however, was the possibility that she might fall in love with Lord Knave herself.

Excerpt

When Prudence lifted her eyes to his again, they sparkled with a challenge. “I was going to save this question until later so as not to shock you from the get-go, but I really do need to know . . . What does it feel like to kiss a woman?”
A large lump formed in Brand’s throat, and his mouth went dry. What the deuce? She had promised not to ask questions that would make him uncomfortable, but already he wanted to flee like a frightened kitten. How could he possibly explain how it felt to kiss a woman?
Brand searched his mind for a way to avoid answering until he heard a snicker escape her lips. She was laughing at him. Him! Hildebrand Ethan Cannon, Viscount Knave—a man at least eight years her senior and a great deal higher in social standing.

LOST FOR WORDS (2017): I LOVE BOOKS BECAUSE THEY DON’T CARE

This book got mixed review since it came out in April last year,  but I really wanted to read it . Now it has just come out in Italian for Garzanti with the title “La libreria dove tutto è possibile” (The bookshop where everything is possible) .  Like every book lover, I can’t resist books about book lovers, librarians, book shops, libraries and so on.

One of the things I especially like in this novel is its being set in York, one of my best favourite English towns with its amazing Minster, its rich Ricardian legacy, its lovely little shops and intriguing ghost stories.

In Butland’s novel there’s a small cute bookshop in the city centre, where Loveday Cardew finds refuge and solace. She only feels safe when she is there, taking care of the books which take care of her at the same time in return. Through the pages of great novels Loveday manages to communicate her deepest feelings: Anna Karenina’s loneliness, Vaniy Fair’s love for life, Wuthering Heights'  overwhelming passion.

BOOKS AT THE OSCARS: THE SHAPE OF WATER & CALL ME BY YOUR NAME

From Books to Movies, From Movies to Books

Oscar talking is everywhere these days and the hype is growing now we are just a few hours away from discovering whether our  favourites will win. However, I'm here to discuss books in this post, the books related to some of the nominated movies. I know that book - to - screen adaptations are mostly disappointing for readers and I've rarely read movie novelizations in my life,  but in those rare cases too I could find little achievement accomplished.

The Oscar-related books I want to share with you today are definitely an exception to that trend: fans are giving ravishing reviews both to books and movies. The title I want to propose to you are  Daniel Kraus's The Shape of Water and André Aciman's Call Me By Your Name
