MY HALLOWEEN TREAT: THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE

Do you remember Hitchcock's Spiral Staircase? Well, there's one in Hill House

I'm really happy to find myself in the position of enjoying a few days off starting from today,  so I'm here to share with you my joy and one of my latest exciting watching experiences, which  may fit the somewhat-dark merriment of today.

Let me be honest first: Halloween has never been a big deal to me because

1. It generally isn't in my country, Italy
2. I'm definitely not attracted to things macabre and gloomy.

But ... there's always a BUT, isn't there?

I've been unexpectedly enjoying a show that may be the perfect pumpkin in your Halloween special -things-to-do list,  if you are not going to a party and are planning a stay-at-home celebration, alone or with friends.

Here's my treat:  The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. I am the first to be puzzled by my suggestion since I never thought a horror show about a haunted house could be something worth watching. But now I'm sure I never thought that, not because I had never seen one before (NE-VAH!),   but  because I had not seen this one yet!

ITALY BOOK TOURS: A LIFE BY DESIGN - 5 QUESTIONS TO AUTHOR LUCY APPADOO

1. Where do you get inspiration for your stories?

For A Life By Design (The Italian Family Series), I was inspired by this story through the character, Elena who had a role in Dancing in the Rain (The Italian Family Series). Elena was very creative in the previous story with her sister, Valeria from Dancing in the Rain, so I wanted to have a character that showed her creative skills in fashion. I adore Italian fashion with the most modern trends, so I wanted to be a part of that excitement of creating modern and contemporary fashion. Elena is the part of me that loves to create (as I like to write), and I have a fascination with Italy as I had visited Italy a number of years ago. The plot came to me by knowing Elena’s character and how her feisty character would be able to handle all the intrigue that came her way. Generally, my inspiration for my other stories comes partly from my imagination (when I’m in a meditative space) and partly from past experiences that are similar or embellished.

WHAT KIND OF PRINT BOOK READER ARE YOU? - THE WISDOM OF LISTENING BLOG TOUR (AUTHOR GUEST POST & GIVEAWAY)

I have come to realize there are at least three kinds of print book readers I see on a regular basis. First is the tidy reader, second is the messy reader, and third is the hybrid reader. Do you know which you are?

To the tidy reader, reading a book is like eating a gourmet meal in a five star restaurant. All of their books are purchased brand new, although exceptions might made for signed first editions. They want to be the first to crack that stiff spine open and love that new book smell. In a bookstore these readers never take the front book from a shelf or the top book in a stack. They reach behind and under to find the most pristine copy they can.

New books are brought home with as little jostling as possible and stored carefully on a bookshelf or stacked neatly on a table next to their reading chair. When they read, they sit upright and always turn a good reading light on. No drinking or eating is allowed to avoid staining the pages. No notations are ever made or corners turned down to mark their place. Only a proper book mark will do. When finished, the books are still in pristine condition. Only another tidy reader would know that its spine had already been cracked.

At the other end of the spectrum is the messy reader. Reading for them is more like eating while camping with no table, chairs or utensils. Books come from every source – new and used book stores, thrift stores, library sales, garage sales and friends. It doesn't matter whether the book is in fabulous condition or a little raggedy; is clean or a little marked up; and dog eared pages aren't even noticed. As long as all the pages are intact and it's a good read they're happy.

STOLEN OBSESSION BLOG TOUR - INTERVIEW WITH MARLENE M. BELL + GIVEAWAY

Interview with author Marlene M. Bell

What do you hope readers take with them after they’ve read Stolen Obsession?

There are many morals in this book. Here are the top three: First, you are stronger than you think you are. Shown by Annalisse’s trials with personal loss and helping those around her. Secondly, keep those around you close to your heart because you never know when they can be taken away. Annalisse experiences a great deal of personal loss. Third, judge people not by what others say about them, but by how they truly are. Give people a chance to redeem any negative qualities that come from hearsay. Annalisse learns this with Alec Zavos, her love interest in Stolen Obsession. The tabloids paint him with a broad womanizer brush, and Annalisse takes her time deciding for herself who Alec is and if he can be trusted.

How long does it take you to write a book?

Stolen Obsession took 8 years from start to finish due to the learning process. I’m working toward publishing the 2nd book, Spent Identity in 2019. I’m at 70,000 words so far!

Where did the idea for Stolen Obsession come from? What was the inspiration?

The main character, Annalisse is a lot like me. Through 8 drafts of the story, the focus changed dramatically. The genre moved from Women’s Fiction to Romantic Mystery. I wouldn’t say the story came from one inspiration because of the long learning process. It has naturally morphed into the final version through plot changes and tons of edits.

Describe Stolen Obsession using seven words.

Ancient Curse Collides With Three Jewelry Pieces

What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

I write every day, even if it’s a few hundred words. First thing in the morning after the sheep are fed. By 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on a good day. On very good days, I can knock out a single chapter in 4-5 hours of work. 1-2 chapters each week with editing along the way. I’m a constant editor, especially since using the Hemmingway App.

What do you like to do when you're not writing?

When I can, I stop and read other authors to keep the creative juices flowing. Spending time with the lambs in their pastures with a camera along is also worthwhile as a pick-me-up when words clog my mind and are disjointed on the page. If my writing stinks, there’s no sense in staying at the keyboard. It’s nice to have options like photography, drawing, painting and of course, sheep.

What do you think makes a good story?

It’s all about the reader turning pages. Whether I write mystery, suspense or the occasional love scene, it’s important to leave a scene to hang with an important question in the reader’s mind. The goal is to create a page-turner by whatever means possible.

PERRY PRETE: "DON'T BE SO FULL OF YOURSELF THAT YOU THINK YOUR WRITING IS A GIFT TO MANKIND"

At the reading group - guest post by Perry Prete

I was asked to speak at a writers’ group last summer held at one of the local nursing homes. I was expecting a group of retired seniors sitting in recliners sipping tea and eating biscuits. Instead, I was greeted by a nice young group of men and women who looked liked cliché writers from a 1970’s hardcover jacket. One of the men wore a tweed jacket with elbow patches and had a bushy beard. If it wasn’t for the no smoking policy, I suspect he would have had been smoking a pipe as well.

I went around the table and found that not one of them had any works published which I found very odd. They asked a lot of valid and poignant questions until one of them asked if I had been paid for my writing.

I replied that I was paid for every piece of published work and expected to be paid for my time.
The woman who appeared to the leader of the group was taken aback and said writing was an art and it should be a privilege to have my work out there for people to enjoy.

THREE GREAT BOOKISH FILMS

1. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Where do I start with this movie? I risk going on rambling for hours about how lovely it is! It is just my perfect cup of tea.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is the adaptation of a book I read back in 2010. If I liked the book,  I loved the movie! And if you enjoy movies about books and reading with a romantic touch,  you can't miss this one. The cast is adorable, the locations are awesome, the story is simple but compelling. A delightful way to spend a couple of hours.

Q/A BOOK REVIEW - THE PHANTOM TREE BY NICOLA CORNICK

"My name is Mary Seymour and I am the daughter of one queen and the niece of another."

What genre does the book belong to?

Time-slip is the first definition which comes to my mind when you ask me, but The Phantom Tree is a novel for fans of mystery, drama and romance. Perfect for readers of Philippa Gregory, Barbara Erskin or Kate Morton.

What’s the historical  setting of the novel?

There are two parallel narrative lines: one set in Tudor England and the other one in present-day England.

BOY ON THE BEACH BLOG TOUR - 5 QUESTIONS FOR AUTHOR R.D.MADDUX + GIVEAWAY

R.D. Maddux has story telling in his blood. Since he was young he’s always loved a good tale. He’s been writing seriously since he was in high school and college. His novels range from Mystery and Intrigue to Sci-fi/fantasy. With Boy On The Beach he’s set the story in modern America, to be exact, on the West Coast of California. He’s a native of the golden state and has been a resident of San Diego since 1987. Before that he grew up in northern California and lived in the Sacramento Valley and Bay Area with sojourns in some of the beautiful parts of our state.
Living in California for over 60 years he couldn't help but watch the way things have changed in our culture and the impact this coast makes on the rest of America and the world. So even though Boy On The Beach is fiction, like most serious novels, it is not without a context and comment on issues we all face in our changing world. It takes place in real locations that are very familiar to him and its characters, which are fictional, no doubt have their counterparts in the real world. Boy On The Beach is a story of intrigue, suspense, revenge, love and redemption with flashbacks to the era when sex, drugs and rock and roll set our culture on it's inevitable journey to our present day. This idea has been rattling around in his heart and mind for a decade and it's finally coming to the page.

Q/A REVIEW - THE BEES BY LALINE PAULL

What genre does the book belong to?

Laline Paull’s debut novel is quite difficult to define, to label.  It is a thrilling adventure reminding the bleak atmospheres of dystopian novels and the bitterness of the Orwellian fable, Animal Farm.

What’s the setting of the novel?

This novel has no specific setting in time and a unique, unuasual setting in place: a beehive.

THE STAGGERING REALITY OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING: AN INTERVIEW WITH RACHEL LINDEN, AUTHOR OF BECOMING THE TALBOT SISTERS

In Becoming the Talbot Sisters (Thomas Nelson), author Rachel Linden hopes to bring a greater awareness to issues important to women around the world and encourage them to live what she describes as “every day brave.”

Becoming the Talbot Sisters tells the story of estranged twin sisters who live very different lives on opposite sides of the world but are drawn to rebuild their relationship in support of one another as they face challenges ranging from miscarriages to sexual assault to career woes. The sisters’ stories draw from many aspects of Linden’s own life as she shares in the interview below.

An author normally works some of herself into her novel. How much of Becoming the Talbot Sisters reflects your own life?

So much of the book reflects my own personal experience! The main themes – women having courage to face infertility and miscarriage as well as sexual exploitation and trafficking – are all very personal for me. I lost my first child to miscarriage, so I identify deeply with that thread of the book. I also worked with a faith-based organization in Europe for seven years, focusing significantly on women who experienced trauma and exploitation, so that theme is one I am very passionate about. The locations in the book are also dear to my heart. I set the book mainly in Budapest where I lived for five years. Parts also take place in Sarajevo and several other fascinating locations around central Europe, all places I enjoy and want to share with readers.

As for the sister-relationship aspect of Becoming the Talbot Sisters, much like Waverly and Charlotte, my sister and I are very different and live geographically far apart. However, we have a harmonious relationship and have grown in friendship more and more as we’ve gotten older unlike the sisters in the book.

Q/A BOOK REVIEW: THE CURSED WIFE BY PAMELA HARTSHORNE

What genre does the book belong to?

It’s a historical fiction thriller, a genre Pamela Hartshorne is familiar with – and very good at -  since she has already dealt with it in some of her  previous novels, which I have reviewed here at FLY HIGH!

What’s the historical  setting of the novel?

The story takes place in Elizabethan London between 1562 and 1590.

Can you briefly sum up the plot without giving away too much?

Well, this is what you find in the book blurb. I hope it is enough to tickle your curiosity: Mary is content with her life as wife to Gabriel Thorne, a wealthy merchant in Elizabethan London.

She loves her husband and her family, is a kind mistress to the household and is well-respected in the neighbourhood. She does her best to forget that as a small girl she was cursed for causing the death of a vagrant child, a curse that predicts that she will hang. She tells herself that she is safe.

But Mary's whole life is based on a lie. She is not the woman her husband believes her to be, and when one rainy day she ventures to Cheapside, the past catches up with her and sets her on a path that leads her to the gibbet and the fulfilment of the curse.

BOOKS & MORE BOOKS - DEBORAH SWIFT'S NEW RELEASE: A PLAGUE ON MR PEPYS

Deborah Swift has been writing successful historical fiction novels about an age less frequently chosen by other writers. We've read plenty of tales set in the fascinating eras of the middle ages or the Tudor years - which Swift herself chose for a few of her novels - but we seldom find adventure or romance set in the 17th century.

BLOG TOUR - LONNA ENOX DISCUSSES HER WRITING STYLE AND PRESENTS THE LAST DANCE + GIVEAWAY

What about my style?

An early reviewer classified my mysteries as "cozy".  They are written in first person and are set in New Mexico.  I like to take the reader with me to places I love, so I incorporate description into the plot.  Readers often say, "I couldn't put it down because I kept turning pages."  I also like to infuse a bit of humor to some characters.
I write wildlife, religious, and humorous "folksy" articles.  I also write mystery novels.
When writing for the newspaper, Mrs. Head reminded me that people have only limited time or money, so we should make our stories worthwhile.  I use enough description to take the reader with me without their becoming bogged down.  My chapters tend to be short, and I allow actions and dialog to describe my characters more than long passages by the author.  My scenes are less graphic, even when my characters are holding their breaths.
I wrote my first books with crayons on paper bags when I was four years old.  My parents didn't know how I'd learned to read or write.  I filled diaries with stories, wrote a romance during science class in middle school, and entered stories and won first place in my high school literary magazine.  I never stopped writing.  But the first writing for which I received a steady income were articles I wrote and published the first two years after my children challenged me to follow my dreams.  I travelled with a wildlife photographer to Maine and wrote about the puffins, to Bosque del Apache in Socorro, New Mexico, to write about the sandhill cranes.  I sold articles about teaching experiences, and articles about my life in general.  Then one evening, on a first date with Ron Tucker, I watched a young woman dancing.  I began The Last Dance after our marriage.

FAITH AND FEARLESSNESS, A NEW SEQUEL TO GASKELL'S NORTH AND SOUTH - AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Faith and Fearlessness is a new, stand-alone sequel to Elizabeth Gaskells masterpiece, North and South, one of my best favourite novels ever. Ive read a few sequels and rewrites before, but when a review copy of Faith and Fearlessness was offered to me, I was immediately triggered by its premise, which made it different from the ones I had read which took the narration over where Mrs Gaskell interrupted it or proposed a variation to the original plot. Actually, at first, that same premise had me both puzzled and curious to discover more. Why puzzled? The book blurb immediately revealed that John Thornton, the Victorian mill owner protagonist of Gaskells novel, is left a broken man after the death of his wife Margaret and a new love interest is on his horizon. Now, that took me a while to digest, but when I started reading the book and I found myself back to Manchester (Milton in North and South), years  had  passed from Mrs Gaskells lovely ending and everything sounded and looked plausible thanks to M.G. Thomass writing style, which was captivating and fast-paced.

Ready to discover more about Faith and Fearlessness? Here are my questions to the author and her answers. If you have more questions for her, please leave them in the comment section.

BOOK UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT: THROUGH A BROKEN HEART BY COLLEEN MEISSNER

Five Questions to the Author

Hello and welcome to FLY HIGH, Colleen.  My first question for you is ... How did you do research for "Through a Broken Heart?

This book was written primarily from my own journey and education. My education which includes a Master’s in Clinical Counseling, has helped me to understand why people think and act the way they do, why they repeat patterns – like dating the same type of guy over and over again or why they avoid relationships all together.

ANITA TENERELLI AND THE EMOTIONAL QUOTIENT - CROWDFUNDING MOVIE PROJECT

If you have a look at my blog you'll find several posts dealing with my fascination with writers and actors. I really love the infinite chances a writer and an actor have to create life - or lives - through their art.
That's why when I happen to really meet  talented ones in my life,  I feel blessed and urged to share their wonderful projects and achievements with all my friends online or in real life.
I met Anita Tenerelli thanks to my sister - she is a friend of hers -  and I invited her, as a bilingual speaker of Italian and English,  to meet my students for an interview.  A native speaker is a rare guest in our little school but precious to our students of English as a foreign language.

Anita talked to them about her living and studying in Texas as as a teenager, after leaving the South of Italy with her family, and about her coming back to Italy as an adult, choosing Subiaco,  our little town surrounded by mountains not far from Rome,  to settle down with her American partner, Craig Peritz, an actor and drama teacher.
Anita has mostly been working as a teacher of English and as a drama teacher here in Italy, despite her brilliant curriculum as an actress, and her dream is to write and make movies. The Emotional Quotient is the movie project she is working on right now. What about helping her and her team to make it come true?

UNFORGETTABLE LOVE - FEATURING AUTHOR KAYLEE BALDWIN + GIVEAWAY

Take a Chance on Me by Kaylee Balwin

Madelyn Stewart knows how to have fun, no matter what her ex-husband claims, but between working two jobs and taking care of her five-year-old son, opportunities for fun are few and far between. So when she is given tickets to take her son to see a live taping of the MyHeartChannel show Take a Chance, they go, even though it means she’ll have to stay up all night to turn in her latest article on time. To her shock, the daredevil star, Chance Risk, is none other than Graham Sawyer, the quiet accounting major she’d dated in college—someone she’d cowardly broken up with by note and hoped to never see again. When she makes a major mistake on her article, she has to swallow her embarrassment and reach out to Chance for an exclusive or risk losing her job. Chance Risk doesn’t talk to reporters. Not after the way he’s seen them destroy his brother’s marriage and career. But Take a Chance is starting to lose viewers, he’s desperate. Despite his better judgment, when Madelyn reaches out, he can’t resist the opening to figure out why she broke his heart eight years before. His only condition: she has to come to three filming locations with him and his crew to get a real sense of what the show is about. Swept up in adventure, they start to feel the chemistry from college rekindling. But the reason Madelyn left eight years before still looms between them. If Chance can’t convince Madelyn to take a chance on love, she’ll walk away again. This time forever.

Destined for Love Resorts Collection - Thrilling Sweet Destination Romances

KEEP ME AT CHRISTMAS by Lucinda Whitney

Can the magic of the season keep them together beyond Christmas? When Luciana Romano arrives in Hudson Springs, New York, her plan is to complete her restoration job at the museum so she can return home to her family in time for Christmas. But a blizzard grounds all flights, and she finds herself stranded. The DiLorenzo family offers her a place to stay, and she accepts their hospitality. But the unexpected attraction between her and the quiet, good-looking son makes it hard to want to leave. Jack DiLorenzo is stuck. Managing the family’s Italian café is not what he’d planned to do with his life, but his sense of duty won’t let him quit. When his grandmother invites a Portuguese woman to stay with them, Jack feels something he hasn’t felt for a long time: hope. He knows he shouldn’t get close to Luciana since she’s leaving as soon as the airport opens, but he can’t help himself. Yet as the magic of the season begins to work on them, he wonders how he can let go of the woman who’s awakened his heart.

UNFORGETTABLE LOVE: A CLEAN ROMANCE EVENT - FREEBIE + GIFT CARD GIVEAWAY! BROOKE S. JAMES, JFK TO DUBLIN

JFK to Dublin by Brooke St. James

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Sarah Spicer took this saying to heart, at least where love was concerned. She had given up any hope in ever finding a decent man. She was convinced they had only one thing on their minds and were untrustworthy and unfit for relationships. This was exactly why she had a strict no-dating policy. That was before she met Collin Ross. He was handsome, successful, and possessed a refined confidence that any woman would have adored. Well, any woman except for Sarah. Her indifference toward his charms made gaining her affection difficult. But patience is a virtue, and Collin was determined to prove that if there was a man worthy of winning her heart, he was the one.
