I think the plot is very interesting, especially contrasted with the time period it was set in.Krishttp://inthesound.us/bookheartnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5114395886235179043.post-64576930889969236312009-08-03T20:54:35.267+02:002009-08-03T20:54:35.267+02:00What a great posting--Ruth is such an interesting ...What a great posting--Ruth is such an interesting book, and I consider it a precursor to Tess of the d'Urbevilles in many ways.

I blogged on it last year when I was in the middle of my Gaskell binge: http://tiny.cc/ftZsJ

One of the things that I love about Gaskell is that the world she describes is not black and white. As a narrator she is ambiguous and sympathetic when her characters face moral dilemmas, and she tries to show both sides of an argument. I think Ruth shows this aspect of Gaskell's writing superbly.JaneGShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11094501834387622997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5114395886235179043.post-10042702701846933582009-08-02T21:49:51.590+02:002009-08-02T21:49:51.590+02:00Thank you so much for posting this. I am reminded of Black Beauty in a way, as the story attempted to show the cruelty of the horse industry at the time.

Even my noveling blog, Uninvoked, has a goal of showing the crueler side of people. Reading your a description of this book gave me some ideas for elaborating on my world. I just found it frustrating to read an enthralling post without being able to leave a comment. But I've figured out a way to do it just yesterday--setting my comment up as 'anonymous'

Anyway, I very much enjoyed this review. I also read your review for SHIRLEY a while back but my comment wouldn't get sent. I will definately add this book to my reading list. I read Gaskell's NORTH & SOUTH, found it a tad disappointing--but I have a feeling I'll like this one better.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5114395886235179043.post-2330258803847569252009-07-31T16:29:49.509+02:002009-07-31T16:29:49.509+02:00Oh I want to read it so much!
