GUY OF GISBORNE: "I LIVED IN SHAME BUT BECAUSE OF YOU I DIE PROUD...AND FREE."

I apologize, I don’t want to sound monotonous. I don’t want to bother you but … I must talk about it. I need to share my sadness (SOB!). Do you remember? I wrote about baddies some days ago in one of my posts (HERE) and didn’t hide my fondness for Sir Guy of Gisborne in Robin Hood (BBC 1). Why am I writing about this again? Terrible news. Unexpected, at least to me, terrible news. Anybody interested in the show knew from the beginning of series 3, at the end of March, that Jonas Armstrong would leave the show, so that his Robin Hood would die in the last episode. But they tightly kept secret the fact that Richard Armitage too was going to leave the show and that his Guy would meet his fate in the same final fight as Robin. Incredible, this episode 13 was a slaughter: Allan, Guy and finally Robin die. How can they commission a series 4? However, Robin Hood ends with this episode for me. I just started watching it because of Richard Armitage - and once you meet his brilliant portrayal of Gisborne you can’t stop watching it . I couldn’t see the whole series 3, not yet though. But I could see several clips all over the NET , especially Utube. Here are some I’ve chosen for you.
As I told you in my previous post, after killing Marian, Guy started a troubled guilt - ridden life which led him to a change. He and Robin had to accept a difficult truce and started fighting side by side in the last episodes.
THIS CLIP TELLS IN FEW MINUTES THE STORY OF GUY’s “CONVERSION TO GOOD”. (By SPIKESBINT)

ROBIN HOOD 3 DVD will be released on 29th June.
It is possible to buy it on line HERE

I don't see how the show can go on without Guy. Simply because he was the most popular character. He won popularity contests in the US over all of the US TV characters and he is from a very obscure show by standards here. RA played him brilliantly and I have seen many people, even professional reviewers, say that there is no other reason to watch this show. I think the show could have withstood the loass of Robin, but not Guy. I read that they had hired a new Robin for next season, but hadn't finalized plans for series 4 yet. I just don't see how they can go on now, unless they have some way of "resurrecting" this character, a coma maybe? Not really dead? I don't know... but if they plan a season 4 they had better think of something fast! I was very sad to see him go, but if he HAD to go I think his death was a good one. He ultimately saved everyone, his wounds are inflicted while shoving Robin out of harms way. We've reached the pinacle of what Guy was meant for before his life got so terribly twisted all those years ago.

@Jenny
They say it'll be in autumn. We'll have to wait. RA is still filming Spooks 8 in London. But you can see him any time you want, he's done plenty of stuff. You put an old DVD on and there he is: Guy or Lucas, Thornton or John Mulligan. By the way, I've just got MOVING ON on dvd from Amazon UK. I got it last Friday, two days ago. I think I'm learning part of the dialogues by heart, I've seen it so many times already. I like also the other episodes, very good. I've got just one yet to see.

Okay my friend and I have talked and have decided that the 4 best episodes from seasons one and two are the one where he discovers that Marian is the night watchman, the one where he refuses to leave Nottingham without her when the army is coming. The one where he burns her house down and the one where he is wearing the armor and she begs the sherriff to save him.

@Jenny
Ok, J. They are all from series 2 and I like them all. They are ep.1 (he burns her house),3 (he wears the armour), 10 ( he refuses to leave the castle without her) , 11 ( he discovers she is the nightwatchman). Good choice , my special consultant and friend. Have a nice day! I'm ready to go to sleep, instead. I've had a very hard-working day today and another one is waiting for me tomorrow.CHEERS!

I enjoyed reading your comments on this episode. I had heard this was going to happen before the last episode, but it was still sad to see the deaths of both Robin and Guy. I don't really think the series could have continued without either of them, so the BBC was probably right to pull the plug on it - however, it strikes me that as the series has now been cancelled, they could have ended it on a higher note without everybody dying! Still, you couldn't get a more dramatic finish... Judy

I'm convinced this show could've gone on quite successfully if the decision hadn't been made to kill off Guy as well. Oh what could've been...

Love your blog. I think it was a good idea to end the series on a high note - Armstrong and Armitage couldn't be replaced. And it fits into the 'anthology/ballad' of Robin Hood, ie. another Robin Hood Band can spring up and breathe life into the character in another way.
